-A great photo from National Geographic: “Down the Hatch” captures an alligator eating a Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus). The caption on the site actually misidentifies the gar as an alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula), but morphology (also locality) definitely indicate L. platyrhincus. We have submitted a message to them with this information (we will see if it is fixed!) Great photograph reGARdless!–
-Quick follow-up on this photo: I emailed NatGeo yesterday with the species ID information and received a response from them this morning; they thanked me for my message and said they would pass along the information to the photographer as well. Now if you check the caption of the photo it has been corrected to read “Florida gar” instead of “alligator gar”! Nice job on keeping the details accurate NatGeo!–
